Real Bride - Emily and Steven - University of Glasgow

by Opus Couture

The team at Opus spoke to Emily, one of our Real Brides, who really wanted to capture the drama of their venue. Take a look at Emilys spectacular pictures and have a read all about their big day!

How did you hear about Opus and how was your experience?

I knew I wanted an Enzoani dress and Opus is the platinum stockist. My experience at Opus was brilliant - so welcoming and helpful. I was made to feel so pretty each time I came for a fitting and the girls fulfilled all of my little extra requirements and requests happily.

How did your partner propose?

We were supposed to get engaged in Italy but, due to the pandemic, we got engaged in our flat instead. Steven had designed a ring with his long-time friend and jewellery designer, and we had been to select diamonds together at her Edinburgh studio. Steven created an escape room in our flat, as this is our main hobby and my favourite thing to do! The premise was that the ring had been lost and I had an hour to retrieve it. The game was brilliant, and very thoughtful (though quite difficult!) As I escaped the room and went into the hallway, Steven was surrounded by candles and got down on one knee. With the ring, significantly.

Next up - THE DRESS!

This was the third dress I tried on and the one I had been most excited about. I had asked the girls at Opus to order it in from the Elysee collection (Enzoani). It’s called the Henriette, which is my Granny’s sister’s name, and is full of gorgeous lace detail, subtle sparkle and beautiful tulle. The girls were able to sew a section of my Grandad’s handkerchief into the under layer so I had my something old and something blue with me all day. I felt the dress was very flattering and made me look like I had more of an hourglass figure than I do in reality! It was a stunning mix of crisp white and ivory fabric, with panels of sheer delicate lace. The veil was a soft tulle with tiny crystals which glistened in the light of the chapel and made me feel so lovely.

Now for the big day…

We knew we wanted to get married at the University of Glasgow Memorial Chapel, as Steven and I had both studied there. We loved how dramatic the building was and, I suppose, our ‘inspiration’ was the drama of the Victorian/Scotts Gothic building. We knew we wanted to play on the beauty of the venue and so opted for a white, green and gold colour scheme to complement the colours of the windows in the chapel. We were lucky enough to secure Duncan McCall, our photographer, who has a very dramatic and stand-out style. This, again, captured the drama of the venue beautifully. We went for forest green bridesmaids dresses and large white and green bouquets, with a mix of dry and fresh flowers.

We would love to hear a little more on your wedding day…

We honestly had the best day! It was the first time we had all been together in such a long while, and it was lovely to celebrate, have a drink and catch up with our loved ones in such exciting circumstances. The most memorable moment for me was walking into the Memorial Chapel and seeing all of our friends and family together, then walking down the aisle laughing at the enormity of it all. Seeing Steven waiting for me was really special and we enjoyed the ceremony even more than we thought we would; it was so personal, fun, funny and romantic. Perfect!
